Sustainability Academy Fourth Graders Reflect on Trout Field Trip

Jul. 24th 2024
Students release trout into the Huntington River

By Joey and Lizzie

4th graders at the Sustainability Academy have been taking care of and raising trout throughout the spring of 2024. They started as eggs and we watched them grow from Egg, Alevin, then Fry, which are stages of their life cycle. We built little models of eggs and alevin. We also drew them while in the tank and had a trout notebook to study them. It was so fun when we got to feed them and test the water quality of the tank.

The amazing art teacher Mr. PK and sustainability coach Kestrel helped us with making a giant 12ft long trout puppet. There were kids inside it who worked really hard to make it happen. We paraded around the school. 5th grade played music and 4th grade carried the trout and the whole school in. It was so much fun and we all loved it. This was part of our whole school celebration of our time with the trout before we released them.

We went on a field trip to release the trout. We went to Huntington River at the Audubon. We walked down and some students carried the cooler with the trout. Then once there, we put the trout (fry stage) in cups and each person got one. Then, we did a ceremony to say goodbye. We got to swim! YAY! It was so much fun!
